Sight Word Materials

As we continue to move forward in our distance learning situation, I have had many questions about sight words and sight word materials.  I wanted to be able to get materials to everyone if they want them.  Here is a list of the sight words kindergarteners are responsible for knowing by the end of the year - 31 total.  Those with a star next to them have NOT yet been taught in school.  These would be the words to focus on if we do not go back to school for a while.

I am attaching a link to a Distance Learning File where I will upload files that may be helpful for you at home.  So far in the file you will find the sight word cards and 2 files with sight word practice worksheets.  If you would like, you are able to download these and print them at home.

Click HERE or click on the image below to access this folder.

I also uploaded the following video into the folder; however, videos can be a little tricky depending on what you are viewing them on.  I also put the video below to play for your children too.  Hopefully one of those works for you and will give you a little game to play to practice sight words.

There are also tons of helpful sites to find games and resources for sight words.  Here are just a few:

If you have any further questions about sight words or are looking for more resources, send me an email and I will help as best I can.  :-)

Kindergarten Supply List and Summer Letter

Dear Kindergartener,

Welcome to Kindergarten!  My name is Mrs. Machan (pronounced May-chin) and I will be your kindergarten teacher.  I hope you are having a wonderful summer with your family and friends.  I am really looking forward to having you in my classroom this year.  I have so many exciting things planned for us including making projects, singing songs, playing games, and of course, lots of learning!

I would like to tell you a little about myself.  This will be my 18th year teaching.  I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades, and this will be my fourth year teaching kindergarten.  I live in Chittenango with my husband, 4 daughters, and our black lab, Molly.  My oldest daughter, Lauren, will be in 5th grade this year and Hannah will be in 3rd grade.  My daughter, Madeline, will be 4 years old in October and our youngest just turned 2 in July.  As a family, we love to spend time in the Adirondacks, play outside, go skiing, and have family movie nights.

Below is a list of important information for your parents to help you have a successful start to the school year:
  • Please bring one picture of your child with his/her name printed on the back of the picture to Kindergarten Orientation in August.
  • Please take a few minutes to write me a letter about your child.  What does your child like? What things do you, as a parent, know about your child that would be important for me to know?  Please include special interests and hobbies.  It is so important to me that I get to know your child right from the beginning so we can start off the year in a great way!  Please also bring this letter to Orientation or send it to me in an email at mmachan@chittenangoschools.org.
  • There will be a snack time every day.  Please provide your child with a healthy snack and drink each day.
  • We will have lunch at school.  Children can buy or bring their lunches.
  • Please bring a backpack to school every day.  We will be sending home letters and projects in the red folders.
  • We welcome all volunteers!  Please let me know at orientation if you are interested in volunteering to help in the classroom.  There are opportunities to help during our school day in our classroom, as well as on field trips and classroom parties.

I’m so looking forward to getting to know all of you this year and am honored to be given the opportunity to work with your children!

Warmest regards,

               Mrs. Melissa Machan

Please bring the following supplies to Kindergarten Orientation in August so we have it all ready for our first day of school.  We will be sharing everything in our classroom, so please do not put your child's name on the supplies unless otherwise noted.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!

  • 2 packages of Dixon Ticonderoga pencils (pre-sharpened are great, but not necessary)
  • 4 boxes of crayons (24 or less)
  • 1 pack of markers
  • 1 pair of children's scissors
  • 12 glue sticks
  • 4 pack of Play-Doh
  • 1 box of tissues
  • An art smock (could be an old T-shirt) labeled with your child's name
  • A beach towel labeled with your child's name to be used for rest time
  • An extra change of clothes in a bag with your child's name

**Extra tissues, paper towels, baby wipes, and small and large Ziploc bags are always appreciated.

Please contact me if you have any trouble getting supplies and I would be happy to help in any way I can.

Scholastic Book Orders

Just a quick note about Scholastic Book Orders.

I try to send Scholastic book orders home each month for you to have an opportunity to buy some age appropriate books at great prices.   Attached to the order forms is usually a note.  If you would like to order you can either send in the order forms with a check payable to Scholastic Reading Club (no cash please) OR order online using our class activation code: LR63B.  You can click right on the button above to go to the website.

Have a great day!
