Unit 1 Sight Words

Each week we will be learning new sight words and also learning a new spelling rule for the week.  I will send home these lists of words for your reference.  I will not give a spelling test; however, I will check to see if students are able to read the words we have learned.  As we learn them, the words will be added to our word wall in the classroom for students to reference when writing.

Here are the words we will learn in Unit 1, which is 5 weeks long:

be
come
down
good
help
it
jump
not
now
over
pull
ride
run
too
up
use
very

September Newsletter

This first month has certainly flown by!  It’s hard to believe that we are already 1/10 of the way through first grade.  Here is just a little of what we have been doing during the month of September:

We started off the year with some getting to know activities.  We spent a lot of time reading some great picture books to help us discuss the expectations of our classroom and the school such as: Being a caring friend and Always doing our best work.   Mrs. Machan loves to reward great behavior with Caught Ya Being Good tickets and group points.  In fact, we had our first 100 Point Party last Friday to celebrate reaching 100 total points since the first day of school.  Way to go first graders!!!

During Reading we have been spending time reviewing our letter sounds by completing beginning and ending sound activities, as well as reviewing kindergarten sight words.  We’ve also started working on short vowels.  Ask your son or daughter about the Short Family.  :)

As we move into October, we will now begin guided reading groups, learning new sight words, and spending lots of time reading, reading, reading!  I will be updating my classroom website with the sight words that students will be learning and you will also receive a weekly list of words (including sight words and words that follow our spelling rule for the week) starting this week.  These are for your reference and to practice at home.  I will not give a weekly spelling test; however, I will assess whether students can or cannot read the assigned words.  We will practice reading AND writing these words all week long in school, so any extra practice you do at home will be great.

I’m sure your children have shared that we begin our days with Daily Math, where we have a number of the day and have to perform different operations on it.  We have also been reviewing the many ways to represent numbers.

To end the month (and actually begin the next month) we will spend some time learning all about apples, which will conclude with a fun Apple Day.   We will do some apple taste testing, make applesauce, and so much more!  You will get to see some of the fun we’ve been having at our Open House on Thursday, October 2nd.  We can’t wait to show you our classroom!

Hope this helps! :)
